You know that airplane safety line: “Put your own oxygen mask on first before helping others”? It’s a cliché… because it’s true. You can’t help anyone if you’re running on zero. You can’t do your best work, show up in your relationships, or feel joy if you’re barely getting by.
And yet—how often do we still put ourselves last?
Let me tell you a little story about a time I didn’t listen to that advice.
A while back, I felt a weird bump on my face. Small at first, but it grew. It hardened. It started to hurt. And even though every part of me knew something was wrong, I kept pushing it aside. I told myself I didn’t have time. Work was too busy. I’d deal with it later. Self-care took a back seat to “just getting through the week.”
By the time I finally made time for myself, it wasn’t an urgent care visit—it was a full-on emergency room trip. I had waited until I was in so much pain I couldn’t ignore it anymore. And all I could think was: Why did I wait until it got this bad?
Because I thought everything else was more important.
Because I forgot to put my own oxygen mask on first.
Taking care of yourself isn’t a luxury. It’s not selfish. It’s necessary.
Sometimes self-care looks like journaling, stretching, or a long walk with my dogs.
Other times? It’s calling the doctor. Drinking water. Saying no. Letting yourself rest without earning it.
So here’s your gentle nudge, lovely:
Check in with yourself. Ask what you need today.
Is it time? Space? Rest? A real meal? A nap that lasts more than 12 minutes?
You deserve your own care. You deserve to be on your own priority list.
